Catholic Womens League

The Catholic Women's League was founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher.  We are a national organisation covering all dioceses in England and Wales.

Our motto is "Charity, Work and Loyalty".

The objectives of the League are:

  • to promote and support charitable works at  parish, diocesan and national levels
  • to unite Catholic Women in a bond of common fellowship forming a national, non party-political organisation
  • to train and encourage members to use their talents and skills in the service of the Church and the community
  • to initiate and maintain charitable works, whether religious, educational  or in the interests of moral and social welfare
  • to try to ensure Catholic representation of these interests on public bodies.

Society today is much changed from that of its Founder 100 years ago, but Margaret Fletcher’s ideals of Charity, Work and Loyalty still hold true for League members today as we work tirelessly to support the clergy and the Church in promoting justice and tolerance for all sections of society.

The CWL Section, here at The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, supports many local, national and international charities including The Medaille Trust. This is a charity that helps women and children who have been freed from sex-trafficking – just one example of the League keeping abreast of major social issues in its second century of service.

2013 Annual Report

Catholic Women's League 2013

We have had a busy year. During 2012 we raised £1,863 for our charities, mostly from the Carnival Bookstall and Harvest Supper. These funds were distributed last December. Since then, £94.20 was donated to the Parish from the Christmas Card tree, and £121 donated to CAFOD from the Lent Lunch.

Last year in June we had a lovely outing to Birmingham Oratory, and the nearby Botanical Gardens.  In July several members attended the National CWL pilgrimage to Oxford.  In August most members wee able to attend the Branch Retreat at Belmont Abbey. A lovely spiritual day and an opportunity to socialise with friends from other sections.  We had a celebration in honour of Our Lady in October, we were delighted that the National President could join us and our new Parish Priest who had just arrived in Ledbury. Several
members attended the Annual Conference in Coventry in mid October. Two members were able to celebrate with the Smallheath section on the occasion of their 40th anniversary; we had previously met some of this section at Conference who kindly invited us; following on from this we also joined them on their annual pilgrimage to honour Our Lady of Evesham, held at the beginning of May.

This July we have celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the section in the
Ledbury Parish. Fr Adrian, our National President, Officers from the Cardiff Branch, our friends from the Smallheath section and present and past
members attended Mass followed by a celebratory lunch at the Royal Oak, Much Marcle and then tea in the Parish Room with a lovely cake.

Our membership numbers are down to 14 and we would welcome new members.
From this September, we will be meeting on the last Thursday of the month after the morning Mass, as the evening meetings are difficult in the winter months.

SVP Report 2014

The Conference is now 7 members strong. There are vacancies for more members, especially ladies.
We meet at 7.30pm on alternate Mondays in the Parish Centre.
Our main role is visiting the sick and elderly at home and in hospital. We also provide lifts to shops, hospital, dentists, church, doctors etc.

We are “first in line” to deal/help with “unfortunates who get stranded in the Ledbury area, probably needing financial help or accommodation.
We support local families who are financially strained  at Christmas time with food vouchers.
We give financial support to our twinned Conference in Kerala, India and occasional support tot hose in disaster areas elsewhere. We are self-funding and exist off our church collection (not needed this year) and our “Spring Fayre” proceeds

This Year's Spring Fayre is  after both Masses  on the weekend of 10th/11th May

THE FLOWER GROUP

There are five flower arrangers in the group who work together at Easter, the Harvest Festival and Christmas.

At other times of the year (not Advent or Lent) we each take a two week period in rotation.

We are grateful to the Parish for the generous donations collected bi-annually which enables us to create beautiful arrangements for the Greater Glory of God

Photos of some of the wonderful arrangements are on the Flower pages
